A special election will be held in Orono in November after the recent resignation of Town Councilor Clint Relyea.
The council held a special meeting on July 31 to accept the resignation of Relyea, who has accepted an employment opportunity in another state and will be moving from Orono. As a result of the resignation, a declared vacancy has been recorded and a Special Municipal Election will be held November 7 to fill the remainder of Relyea’s term, which expires in March 2019.
Nomination papers for the declared vacancy will be available on Monday, August 14 at the Town Office and must be returned no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, September 22. In order to qualify for the declared vacant Town Council seat, a person must reside within the Town of Orono and be a registered Maine voter.
Nomination papers are a legal document recorded in the town office which allows a candidate to be placed on a municipal ballot, once certified by the Municipal Clerk. Prior to being certified for acceptance, the nomination paper must list the declared vacancy, be signed by the candidate, and then circulated within the town for the collection of registered voters signatures and notarized. At least 25, but no more than 100, signatures of Orono voters are required to have a name placed on the municipal ballot.
