Orono takes home golf state championship

VASSALBORO, Maine — The Orono Red Riots golf team became state champions after winning the Class C State Championship match on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.

The Riots posted a final score of 345, earning a six-shot victory over runner-up Saint Dominic Academy of Auburn. North Yarmouth Academy came in third with a score of 357.

Jason Desisto and Zack Dill both shot an 83 to finish tied for 11th place, leading Orono to its first Class C golf championship. Leading the girls team, Clarice Bell took home third place with an individual score of 97.

“To say I’m proud would be an understatement. This entire team is a group of determined, strong-minded, kind-hearted champions,” coach Thomas Hanscom posted on Facebook after Saturday’s match.

“I have been incredibly lucky to be able to coach this team over the last month or so and, if I have any say in it, these coach-player relationships will last much longer than the end of this season.”
